Briefly explain the five guidelines for leadership.

Answers will vary. Five useful guidelines appear to emerge from the extensive leadership research of the past sixty years:
1. Leaders and organizations should appreciate the unique attributes, predispositions, and talents of each leader. No two leaders are the same, and there is value in this diversity.
2. Although there appears to be no single best style of leadership, there are organizational preferences in terms of style. Leaders should be chosen who challenge the organizational culture, when necessary, without destroying it.
3. Participative, considerate leader behaviors that demonstrate a concern for people appear to enhance the health and well-being of followers in the work environment. This does not imply, however, that a leader must ignore the team's work tasks.
4. Different leadership situations call for different leadership talents and behaviors. Leaders must know when to give advice, when to counsel, when to coach, and when to mentor. To meet the needs of their followers, they must be good diagnosticians.
5. Good leaders are likely to be good followers. Although there are distinctions between their social roles, the attributes and behaviors of leaders and followers may not be as distinct as is sometimes thought. Please see the section "Guidelines for Leadership" for more information.
