The complete observer has no interaction with informants; they are not aware that they are being observed. The observer-as-participant role happens when the researcher makes short trips to a site for interviews or observations. The participant-as-observer role happens when the researcher spends some time in a community. In the complete-participant role, the researcher participates so closely in informants' lives that his or her research role may be unknown to them.
