Answers will vary. Effective global leaders become who they are by cultivating particular ways of interpreting the world. They develop competencies that enable them to interpret the world differently and to react effectively to those interpretations. One defining factor is that global leaders have unique and identifiable traits. For instance, global leaders are curious about the world and about people different from themselves. This interest inspires visionary initiatives that can lead organizations to span national boundaries. But while many people think leaders are born and not made, evidence indicates that leadership skills can be developed.
There is a need for companies to develop global leaders with a strong global mind-set, an ability to work across functions, and a strong vision of what the corporation is trying to accomplish in order to serve the global company. Simultaneously, companies must also develop leaders with a deep understanding of what local customers want, the resilience to adapt to the local context, and the ability to adapt to different cultures. What this all means is that more companies are (or should be) requiring global leadership competencies of their managers.
The section "The Need for Global Leadership" on pages 292-293 discusses why developing global leadership is no easy task. Students can use this section to make their own interpretation and answer this question.
