Why did the publisher of Time-Life magazine call the end of World War II the beginning of "the first great American century"?

While World War II killed 60 million people and left much of the world in ruins, the United States had lost a relatively small number of its citizens in the war and produced half the world's goods with only 6% of the world population. This level of economic power had never been surpassed.
