Conformity refers to a change in beliefs or actions as a reaction to real or imagined group pressure. In order for a society to function, its members develop norms, or informal rules, that govern behaviour. If such a system of agreements did not evolve, chaos would result. Although norms change slowly over time, there is general agreement within a society about which ones should be obeyed, and we adjust our way of thinking to conform to these norms.
