One of the theories on prejudice states that prejudice helps people define themselves and feel socially accepted.

According to the social identity theory, people tend to define themselves by the groups they belong to, and one way of creating a positive group identity is by discriminating against others outside the group. By doing so, people feel socially accepted and part of a larger meaningful community. Therefore, prejudice can function as a mechanism of enhancing one's self-esteem and social identity, at the expense of others.
