One of the dimensions identified by Atkinson, Morten, and Sue is cognitive development. This dimension refers to the way individuals think about race and racial issues.

In the first stage, the Pre-encounter stage, individuals may hold beliefs that are based on stereotypes and may not critically analyze their own attitudes towards race. As they move into the Encounter stage, they may begin to have personal experiences that challenge their previous beliefs, leading to a shift in their cognitive understanding of race. In the Immersion-Emersion stage, individuals may actively seek out information and education about race, leading to a more nuanced and complex understanding of racial issues. In the Internalization stage, individuals may have fully integrated their new understanding of race into their belief system, leading to a more open and accepting attitude towards racial diversity. Finally, in the Internalization-Commitment stage, individuals may actively work to promote racial equality and challenge systemic racism, demonstrating a strong commitment to their changed attitudes towards race.
