The Supreme Court of India, in its landmark judgment in September 2018, upheld the constitutionality of the Aadhaar Act, 2016, but with certain restrictions. It ruled that Aadhaar does not inherently violate privacy rights and is constitutionally valid for welfare schemes and income tax returns, among other things, while striking down some provisions of the Act to protect individual privacy.
