What is the purpose of the Montreal Protocol?

The purpose of the Montreal Protocol is to prevent pollution that harms the ozone layer. The U.S. and 23 other countries entered the treaty and agreed to reduce their production and consumption of all chemicals, in particular CFC's commonly called freon. The signatories agreed to try to conserve the ozone layer that protects the earth from the sun's harmful rays by decreasing the use of CFC's worldwide.
