Leilani Muir was labelled as "feeble-minded" and institutionalized in a special school in Alberta. In 1959, at the age of 20, she was forcibly sterilized without her knowledge or consent. The sterilization was performed under the Sexual Sterilization Act of Alberta, which allowed for the sterilization of people deemed "mentally defective." Muir later sued the Alberta government and received a settlement in the landmark case of Muir v. Alberta (1995).
