Studies have consistently shown that the average American exhibits little knowledge of political institutions, processes, leaders, or policy debates. For example, a survey by the Annenberg Public Policy Center found that only a quarter of Americans could name all three branches of government, and a third could not name any. Similarly, a Pew Research Center survey found that only about a third of Americans could name the current Vice President, and even fewer could name the Speaker of the House or the Secretary of State. Additionally, many Americans struggle to understand complex policy debates, such as those surrounding healthcare or taxation.
