Summarize the process of DNA replication.

1. The enzyme DNA helicase unwinds and unzips the DNA strand and breaks the hydrogen bonds between the bases.
2. New complementary DNA nucleotides are attached to both sides of the strand by the DNA polymerase.
3. The DNA polymerase will add the new nucleotides in the 5' to 3' directions. This produces a leading strand and a lagging strand that is composed of short segments of the DNA.
4. DNA ligase connects the short strands and seals any breaks in the sugar phosphate backbones.
5. The two double-helix molecules are identical to each other.
