Recent scholarship has suggested that Olaudah Equiano may have been born in the New World rather than in Africa.

Some researchers have pointed out inconsistencies in Equiano's own account of his birthplace and cultural practices, as well as documentation of slave ship activity in the region where he claimed to have been captured in Africa. While it is still debated, the theory that Equiano was born in the New World is gaining more support.
