The delayed-response problem is a task in which an animal is given a signal indicating where it can find food. The signal is then removed and the animal is restrained for a period of time to see how long it can remember the signal. In the detour problem, an animal is separated from food by a barrier to see whether it will take a detour away from the food in order to get to it.
