Meyer v. Nebraska (1923) overturned a Nebraska law that prohibited the teaching of any modern language other than English to children who had not yet passed the eighth grade. The Supreme Court ruled that the law unreasonably infringed upon the liberty guaranteed by the Fourteenth Amendment, which includes the rights of parents and guardians to engage teachers to instruct their children in languages other than English.
