Tranquilizers, or benzodiazepines, are often used to treat mild to moderate anxiety on a temporary basis. They work by slowing down the central nervous system and producing a calming effect. However, long-term use can lead to dependence and other side effects, so other forms of therapy such as cognitive-behavioral therapy may be recommended for ongoing treatment.
