Explain G. Stanley Hall's definition of adolescence as a period of "storm and stress."

In his 1904 book Adolescence, G. Stanley Hall, known as the father of adolescence, defined it as a period of "storm and stress." He viewed puberty, the biological transition to adulthood often viewed as the beginning of adolescence, as a trigger for a universal, inevitable, and extreme upheaval. He based his theory on then-popular Lamarckian evolutionary theory, which held that memories and acquired characteristics can be inherited from generation to generation and that the development of the individual mirrors that of the human species as a whole. Hall explained that adolescents' extreme volatility is inherited and reflects a time in human history that was very active and challenging, specifically, the birth of civilization. Therefore, intense turmoil, such as serious depression, severe troubles with parents, and extreme delinquent activity, was to be expected and was a sign of normal healthy development, triggered by puberty.
