Do conflict and stress bring out stereotypes, including racial stereotypes? Explain with examples.

Research indicates that conflict and stress tend to bring out stereotypes. The subtitle of one set of studies is "She's fine if she praised me but incompetent if she criticized me." In these studies, college students evaluated female university instructors as less competent than male instructors after receiving negative evaluations from them but not after receiving positive evaluations from them. Students who were praised by a woman or by students who watched someone else receive praise or criticism from a woman did not use the stereotype that women are less competent than men.
Similar findings have been reported for racial stereotypes. People are more likely to use racial stereotypes when there is a disagreement or conflict than when everyone agrees.For example, white participants in one study read about a court case, gave their verdict,and then observed a videotape of a black or white fellow juror who either agreed or disagreed with the participant's verdict. Later, on a computerized test, participants showed faster reaction times to black stereotypical words when black fellow jurors had disagreed with them. Thus, stereotypes may lie buried and forgotten much of the time, but when a black person disagrees with a white person, the stereotypes start leaping to mind.
