This legislation governs the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information and applies to all organizations, including private corporations. The legislation deals with notice requirements, the need for consent, limits on use and disclosure, accuracy of information, security safeguards, access to information, and complaints and violations. The central core of the legislation is the CSA Model Code for the Protection of Personal Information. This legislation applies in all provinces except where substantially similar legislation has been passed by the provinces. This statute does not create a general right to sue for invasion of privacy in tort.
