Describe the strengths and criticisms of humanistic theories of personality.

While humanistic theories argue that the purpose of the human condition is to realize one's potential, there are several issues with this approach. One is that this argument is something that cannot be tested by experimental procedures. Another is that this idea may focus too heavily on the Western cultural ideal of achievement, and foster self-centeredness. Additionally, the optimism inherent in these approaches may fail to take into account the evil that exists in human nature. However, Rogers did find some support for his theories in that individuals whose ideal and real selves were similar were likely to report being happier than when this was not the case.
