Several theories have been proposed to explain the cause of infantile amnesia. One theory suggests that it is due to the underdevelopment of the brain's memory-forming areas during infancy, particularly the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, which are crucial for encoding and storing episodic memories. Another theory posits that the rapid rate of neuronal growth and synaptic pruning in the early years may disrupt the stability of memory traces.

Additionally, the way memories are encoded and retrieved changes as children grow. Infants and very young children may not have the cognitive or language skills necessary to form the complex neural representations required for long-term episodic memory. As language and cognitive abilities develop, so does the ability to form memories that can be recalled later in life.

Furthermore, the social and cultural context in which a child grows up can influence memory encoding. As children interact with others and learn the narrative structure of storytelling, they become better at organizing and retaining memories in a way that is accessible later on.

Despite these early memory gaps, children are capable of forming some types of memories, such as procedural memories (how to do things) and semantic memories (facts and general knowledge), which do not seem to be affected by infantile amnesia.
