Culture is not limited to ethnicity and is not something that can be ignored by caregivers. It is a pervasive force that affects all aspects of our lives, including our beliefs, values, behaviors, customs, and traditions. It is important for caregivers to pay attention to culture and to develop cultural competence in order to provide effective care that respects and honors the diversity of the people they serve. The idea of melting cultures into one another is not respectful of the uniqueness and richness of each culture.
