Compare the differences between the walls of arteries and veins.

Both arterial and venous walls are composed of three layers. The middle layer in the arterial wall is much thicker than that in the veins due to the smooth muscle. The thicker wall can contract to help regulate blood flow and blood pressure. The innermost layer of the veins will often have valves that help prevent the back flow of blood.
