Briefly describe what Freud meant when he discussed the Oedipus complex.

During the third stage of psychosexual development, Freud argued that boys develop a desire to possess their mother and a simultaneous resentment of their father. He felt that boys then fear their father in what he called castration anxiety. The complex is resolved through identification with the father.
