Antisocial personality disorder is primarily characterized by a long-term pattern of disregard for, or violation of, the rights of others. This may not necessarily involve extreme negative emotionality or an inability to regulate emotions, as suggested, but rather includes traits such as deceitfulness, impulsivity, irritability, aggressiveness, disregard for the safety of oneself or others, consistent irresponsibility, and lack of remorse. Emotional regulation issues and unstable relationships are more characteristic of borderline personality disorder.
